| Germany: A most successful year for spoga+gafa |
 | |
The Köln Messe has reported that the world's No 1 Garden Products trade fair, spoga+gafa in Cologne, was a huge success with 1774 vendors from 57 countries exhibiting at the show. Over 35,000 visitors from 106 countries attended the trade fair, a figure 40% higher than two years ago when the fair was predominantly only spoga, proving the need for an annual spoga + gafa event. EDRA is very pleased to report that almost every member sent representatives, totalling more than 140 known buyers attending this event, including the global network members such as Bunnings of Australia, EpicentrK of Ukraine, Tekzen of Turkey and BYKO of Iceland just to mention a few. The CEO of Bunnings, John Gillam, gave a well-attended company presentation inviting vendor companies to take advantage of Bunnings' continual growth in Australia and New Zealand.
Sadly, again, some top name vendors did not have booths at the fair but the executives from these companies were almost all present in Cologne and making contacts with the buyers who attended this show. Whilst respecting that cost can be an issue, EDRA retailers are disappointed that these companies did not show some presence in the form of a small contact booth at the fair, rather than meeting the buyers in hotels or indeed outside the fair altogether.
EDRA will continue to support trade fairs and is now in it's second year of providing services for members at its "Recommended Global Trade Fairs" such as organizing meetings, dinners and store tours for its members. |

| UK: Rumours of Kingfisher takeover |
Shares in Kingfisher, owner of DIY chain B&Q, rose sharply last week, on the back of rumours of a takeover. Suggestions that two US DIY chains - Home Depot and Lowe's - could both make a move for the B&Q owner meant the group finished 5.2p higher at 236.5p. As well as the flagship B&Q business, Kingfisher owns Screwfix in the UK and Castorama in France, as well as a significant share in Hornbach in Germany, and it is also a DIY market leader in Poland, Turkey and China. However, it is not the first time the two US companies have been linked to Kingfisher, and it has also been suggested that it could be a target for private equity concerns. Market rumours suggested a bid price as high as £3.50 a share - a significant premium to the current price, and one which would value Kingfisher at more than £8bn. |

| UK: Kingfisher boss calls for global talks on deforestation |
Kingfisher Group CEO Ian Cheshire has called for annual government-level talks to achieve zero net deforestation by 2020. Delivering the keynote address at the Forest Stewardship Council's General Assembly in Malaysia Mr Cheshire said government-level talks should bring together the world's environment ministers to establish a roadmap for international cooperation and to secure the future of the world's forests. Kingfisher operates 330 B&Q stores in the UK and Ireland, selling more than 16,000 products containing wood, either as whole timber or as a constituent part. The company was a founding partner of the FSC in the early 1990s, and announced in February this year that it was the first major UK retailer to only buy timber products from proven responsible sources. |

| Belgium: 1st Global DIY Summit a great success |
Almost 400 senior executives from 35 countries attended the 1st Global DIY Summit held in Brussels on 8-9 June. In particular they were privileged to witness the very emotional presentation of the 1st Global DIY Lifetime Award, presented to Pat Farrah, the co-founder of the Home Depot. First a truly brilliant laudation speech was delivered by Jack Truong, Vice President of 3M. So perfectly researched and executed, and so very befitting of a "giant" of our time who invented the "big box" DIY retailing that later enriched the lives of so many consumers around the globe. Farrah is a most honest, decent person and so it was no surprise that, choked with emotion, he quickly honoured the first buyer, Rick Mayo, who joined him in the new venture, the birth of The Home Depot. Farrah is passionate, enthusiastic and bursting with energy and, as the seemingly endless standing ovation portrayed, a most deserved recipient of this first global award. |

| Brussels: EDRA kick-starts initiatives |
Last month EDRA members spent two successful days in Brussels meeting some of the industry's most important politicians. This included positive talks with Europe's Climate Change Commissioner about energy efficiency and how the home improvement sector could help householders reduce their monthly bills while contributing to fighting climate change. Over dinner EDRA and Fediyma were joined by five leading European parliamentarians who were interested in getting to know the sector in more depth. There is a big debate in Brussels currently about limiting retailer power, through regulation of "unfair contracts". The event was successful in its aims of showing that the home improvement industry is different, demonstrating that the retailers and suppliers can work together and of building close links with the MEPs. This was a good start for EDRA in Brussels but now the real work begins.
